In June 2014 the British Council in partnership with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, the Centre for Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Fund of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Istedod, University of World Languages and Pedagogical Innovation Centre continued a series of events with the title ‘Skills for the New Generation”. The programme contributed to the implementation of national reforms in education and English language practice in the country.
June 2-7 "English for Tourism"
The training aimed to develop materials for ‘English for Tourism’ course, to discuss the ways of improvement of the existing learner curriculum at Tourism colleges. It gathered 9 national experts in materials design and assessment and was led byJean Wilson; a leading expert on Vocational Oriented language learning in the UK will lead the work.
June 7-13 “A New Curriculum for Trainee Teachers of English”
The project aimed to scale up and introduction of the new curriculum in seventeen educational institutions in Uzbekistan which train English language teachers.
In partnership with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, the University of World Languages and Norwich Institute for Language Education we are reforming the system of training future teachers of English.
On June 7- 13 2014 the project team was summarising the results of the new PRESETT exit exam, finalised the curriculum portfolios and planned intensive cascade training activities in the new academic year that will benefit 300 PRESETT teachers. It was also planned to run a video conference for around 700 English teachers in all higher education institutions on Language Awareness and for all English teachers in 18 pre-service teacher training institutions to talk about project developments and innovation in English teaching.
Rod Bolitho, a leading expert on English Language Teaching in the UK, was taking part in the week.
June 9-13 UCLan- TITLI Fashion Design and Promotion programme
A week long collaborative project took place between the two institutions on week commencing 09 June 2014. Using locally produced Uzbekistan textiles the two institutions worked together to design and create a range of clothes and promotional materials which were displayed at the end of the week at a presentation finale.
There were six teams formed to complete the project. These were made of four Design teams and two Promotion Teams. Each team comprised a mix of one UCLan student and three or four TITLI students.
An informal event was held on the evening of Friday 13 June when there was an opportunity for students to present the garments and marketing and promotion materials as a finale to the week.
June 11 "Professional Development for Teachers and Trainers Conference"
The conference aimed to develop capacity for further reforms in English teaching in Uzbekistan through professional development of the core group of 90 trained teachers and trainers from all over Uzbekistan who attended courses in the UK funded by the Istedod in 2013.
Rod Bolitho, a leading expert on English Language Teaching in the UK took part in the Conference.
June 19 "Enhancing Quality in Teaching and Learning Conference"
The Conference was a part of ‘Enhancement of Quality Assurance through Professional Development of Academic Leaders’ (QAPD) TEMPUS project in which supported by the MHSSE and led by London Metropolitan University brings together three European universities, five Uzbek HE institutions and the British Council. The Conference brought together 76 participants including education management, rectors, academic leaders and experts from Uzbekistan, UK, Greece and Lithuania to celebrate major project achievement including curriculum reform projects and recommendation on quality assurance management and concepts of the Quality Centers; the Conference also discussed further steps in developing quality culture in higher education.
Skills for the Tourism Sector Project
June 23 - 27 a study tour “From developing occupational standards to qualifications and national qualification frameworks”, Edinburgh, Scotland
The aim of this tour was to share with delegates the UK’s knowledge of qualifications development and validation in order to help delegates inform their own national skills plans. Delegates included Skills for the Tourism Sector Project team which consists of the representatives of NAC “Uzbektourism”, Center for Secondary Specialised education under the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialised education of the republic of Uzbekistan and the tourism colleges.
Delegates reviewed the role of UK Sector Skills organisations in developing occupational standards that reflect employers’ needs and government strategies. Participants had an opportunity to understand the main processes involved in developing occupational standards, the value of national qualification frameworks as policy instruments that support mobility, progression and international collaboration, define how training providers develop training programmes leading to accredited qualifications. Tour provided participants with opportunities to network with leading UK and international experts in the field of employer ownership of skills.
